For patients that have very thin, or abnormally shaped corneas, Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASIK) may be the only option. First performed in 1987, the LASIK technique preserves the extremely thin epithelial layer to gain access to the corneal stroma before the Laser Treatment is applied.
Am I A Good Candidate?
Are You A Candidate For Vision Correction? The Ideal Candidate: There are times when our practice must turn away patients because they are not a good candidate for the procedure and our number one concern is not the number of patients we bring in but the quality of care and high level of service we provide to the community.
Pterygium is a growth of the conjunctiva that grows onto the cornea. The conjunctiva is the clear tissue that covers the sclera (the white part of the eye) and also lines the inside of the eyelids. The exact cause of Pterygium is unknown, but many associate it with excessive exposure to wind, ultra-violet rays (typically from the sun), and/or sand.
What is Cataracts? Cataracts develop gradually over time as natural proteins within the eye structure and clump together, causing obstruction to vision. It is a natural part of aging and nearly everyone gets cataracts, typically after age 60. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects your ability to see clearly.
The normal cornea is very sensitive to touch, foreign body sensation, and mild superficial injury. Anyone who has ever had an eye infection, contact lens-related irritation or corneal scratch knows this to be true. A network of sensory nerves provides this exquisite sensitivity. In LASIK, creation of the flap causes some of these nerves to be cut, which actually diminishes sensitivity.
